Water and Soil Scientist


"After the trip, students were able to hold an informed conversation about characteristics of soil & water. They made connections to other ideas that are related as well (fish tanks, pools gardens, etc.).

Field Trip Activities:
  • Water Testing
    • Students analyze water samples for pH, nitrates, salinity, turbidity, dissolved oxygen & temperature.
    • They learn the causes of changes in water quality and how that relates to the Chesapeake Bay.
  • Soil Testing
    • Students analyze 3 soil samples including one from their schoolyard or nearby.
    • They look at texture, size, color, percolation, and pH.

Connection to Science Curriculum

  • Quarter 1 - Earth Science and Environmental Science - Environmental Issues
Special Instructions: Please bring:
  • A quart-size baggie of soil from the schoolyard or a nearby neighborbood.
  • A gallon of water from a nearby creek or river for water testing.
